Royal Canadian Agricultural Winter Fair & Fight Bullying Contest

This past Thursday The grade 5 and 6 classes attended "The Royal Canadian Agricultural Winter Fair". The kids took knowledge from the Science program and made connections to the real world. The grade 6 students saw first hand the affects of biodiversity and the impact farms have on the world. From observing livestock to different foods students eyes were opened to many real life examples of what they had been studying.
I also had a great encounter with the one and only Captain America. Cap shares my passion to stop bullying and make this world a better place for everyone. Marvel has teamed up with The Royal Canadian Winter Fair to put on a contest. Students are asked to submit a story illustrating how to make this world a better place for all people. Peace by PEACE

I've been fortunate enough to be part of Peace by PEACE since 2007. I've been a volunteer in the classroom, served on the executive and the board of director and now I have the program and the volunteers in my class.
Peace by PEACE teaches students messages on anti-bullying, inner power and critical thinking with media all centred around a curriculum that is all game based. These games immerse students and provides a great starting point for discussion on sensitive issues.

A Bullying Story

A great shadow video to illustrate the tragic story of a bullied student. The images, colours and symbols in the video are fantastic. Had so many amazing answers when I asked the students, "How this inspires them to be a stronger Catholic?" Great media lesson too!
The kids got really excited and asked me to make if they can make their own. Might have some impressive videos to show soon.

End of the Year Project

The "To This Day" video by Shane Koyczan is absolutely beautiful. From his spoken word poetry to the many artists featured; this video keeps inspiring me.

As a class we are undertaking an ambitious end of the year project. Each student contributed and stanza on the power and effect bullying has, and a second stanza on overcoming bullying. Let me explain that bullying takes many forms and hurts everyone it touches. The students are combining all the stanzas to create a massive class poem and creating artwork to feature in the video. The project is just beginning, but I am incredibly proud of the students compassion and initiative. Every single student is working with a technological medium they have not used; from claymation, stop-motion pictures, puppet show videos, digital comics, etc. The kids are out of their comfort zone and loving it!

Keep watching to see what happens.
Below is the original video that inspired all of this.
